Soros @ HKU: On China-US Relations

Hong Kong – The US and China is now in a “negative-sum” relationship because of a lack of mutual understanding, George Soros said.

“They never really understand each other’s issues,” he said.

Referring to the riots in Tibet in 2008, he said: “Chinese were angry about the Chinese shops on fire while the west saw desperate moves for the suppressed.”

The West in general, including the US, still disagrees on lots of issues with China. The recent US-Taiwan arms sales has once again put a strain on the US-China relation, which is vital for creating a global financial regulatory system.

“If the US and China, the two most important countries don’t agree, it (global financial regulation) can never be accomplished.”
