Hong Kong – As part of its relief measures, the government will waive two months of rent for public housing tenants and give an extra allowance to  people in need, Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah said in his budget speech on Wednesday.

Low income tenants will receive the full benefit. Those who are better off will receive a break on two-thirds of their rents for two months.

The government will also give an extra payment equivalent to one month’s benefits to social welfare recipients, and those who receive old-age and disability allowances.

The measures will cost about $1.8 billion.
